#5: Is the Use of Currency Making Us Greedy?

Is the use of currency a good idea? It seems like it's the only solution, at least nowadays. Remember when the indians used to trade their belongings for food, clothing, etc. They never used currency. In a civilized world today, it seems like this wouldn't work, but is it a truly crazy idea? My problem with using money is: People are greedy. People fall in love with money and do anything they can to get as much of it as possible. Sometimes people even STEAL money to get it. Some people cheat their way into money that isn't theirs, or that they didn't work to achieve. It's just a piece of paper. What's so great about it? I'll tell you what: It can give you any material thing your heart desires. Isn't it sad that the object that is ALWAYS highest in demand is a mere piece of paper? Trading and sharing, like the indians used to do, might actually be a better idea. But who determines how much someone should give in order to receive a certain shirt, for instance?

There's one other concern. Capitalism couldn't exist if we traded with others in order to buy what we need to survive. I just can't see both coexisting. That could be a problem... But if capitalism isn't what our country needs, then maybe I'm onto something...

On the flip side, it's true that people fall in love with money, but if we used another kind of currency, or if we traded like the indians did, then wouldn't people simply fall in love with the new currency, or with objects that could be traded in for something else? How do we get around this? How do we keep people from becoming obsessed with money? How do we keep people from stealing it?

I think the answer is: We are humans. We are flawed. We will always be greedy, and we will always steal. There's no way to get around it. Who knows? Maybe someone will come up with a solution someday.
